Home Server Pt.1

Home Server Pt.1

Dec 05

This is post 1 of a series of entries I’ll be making to document the progress of my Home Server build/setup.

As you’re reading through, please feel free to let me know if there’s anything you’d like me to cover.

—————–

Last week I acquired an old PC – Nothing spectacular:

  • Intel P4 3Ghz
  • 2GB Ram
  • No HDD :(
  • DVD/CD-RW Drive

Quite what I was going to do with this I don’t know. However, after a few hours thought I came up with the plan of making it in to a home server.

This grand plan is that this home server is going to be holding my iTunes Library, Photo’s and DVD Rips so I can stream to my AppleTV2.
As well as holding my media, it will be used as a print and general file server.

So, I sourced a temporary HDD to start playing around with.
I’d really like to run this server on Linux, however that was swiftly halted when my trial run of iTunes in Wine (Wine is a Windows emulator for Linux) failed. Wine doesn’t run iTunes 10.5 well enough to be able to enable Home Sharing – which is the feature I need to stream to ATV2.

Plan b was, of course, is to run Windows. I don’t really want to just run XP, Vista etc
A little experiment later with Windows 7 and it’s confirmed that the P4 CPU in this PC supports 64bit OS :)
With this little discovery, I took myself to eBay and purchases a shiny new copy of Windows Home Server 2011.

Having never used WHS I’m very much looking forward to tinkering with it upon arrival.
